Beukes was born and raised in South Africa and she is of French and Dutch cultural descent. She earned an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Cape Town. In the past she worked as a freelance journalist for ten years, including two years in New York before becoming a renowned fantasy author. She currently lives happily in Cape Town with her husband Matthew Brown who is a television director and their daughter.
The very first novel Beukes ha published was Moxyland. Now she is an international best seller with popular books such as The Shining Girls which was published in 2003. At some point in her career Beaukes became a head writer for Clockwork Zoo, was also part of the development team that created the first half-hour animated TV series in South Africa, URBO: The Adventures of Pax Afrika. She also wrote 12 episodes of the famous Disney Playhouse show names Florrie's Dragons for a company called Wish Films and she also wrote episodes for the animated series Mouk for a French production company known as Millimages.
