Brian Jacques Biography

Brian Jacques was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939. Brian grew up in the area around the Liverpool docks, where he went to St. John's School which was an inner city school featuring an amazing playground on its roof. Brian’s two grown sons, Marc who is a carpenter and bricklayer and David who is a professor of Art still reside in their father’s hometown of Liverpool.

At the age of ten and his very first day at St. John's perhaps foreshadowed his future career as an author. There he was given an assignment to write a story about animals in which he wrote a short story about a bird who cleaned a crocodile's teeth. Brian's teacher had said that she could not and would not believe that a ten year old could write that well. When young Brian refused to say that he had copied the story which in fact he did not, he was labeled as a childhood liar. He had always loved to write and it was then that he realized he had a talent for it in the first place.

He wrote Redwall for the children that attended the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool, where before his writing career he delivered milk as a truck driver. Because of this he made his style of writing as descriptive as possible since he had to focus on a much younger audience. He often painted pictures with words so that the schoolchildren could see them in their imaginations. He remained a popular patron of the school until his death.

Brian Jacques' work can still be seen today in many Children's hospitals, soccer stadiums, and offices as far away as Germany, Mexico, and Chile. Brian also ran a weekly radio show on BBC Radio Merseyside up until October 2006. On the radio show he shared his comedy and wit, and even played his favorite music from the world of opera.

When he wasn’t writing, Brian enjoyed walking his dog a West Highland Terrier who he had named Teddy and frequently completed crossword puzzles. Whenever he had the time he read the works of Mario Puzo, Damon Runyon and Richard Condon. He was also known to cook an impressive version of his favorite dish, spaghetti and meatballs.
