Brian Jacques was born in Liverpool, England on June 15th, 1939. Brian grew up in the area around the Liverpool docks, where he went to St. John's School which was an inner city school featuring an amazing playground on its roof. Brian’s two grown sons, Marc who is a carpenter and bricklayer and David who is a professor of Art still reside in their father’s hometown of Liverpool.
At the age of ten and his very first day at St. John's perhaps foreshadowed his future career as an author. There he was given an assignment to write a story about animals in which he wrote a short story about a bird who cleaned a crocodile's teeth. Brian's teacher had said that she could not and would not believe that a ten year old could write that well. When young Brian refused to say that he had copied the story which in fact he did not, he was labeled as a childhood liar. He had always loved to write and it was then that he realized he had a talent for it in the first place.
