Peter S. Beagle Biography

Born on April 20th, 1939 is an American author who is more known for his works in the fantasy genre. If you have ever watched The Last Unicorn movie that you most likely have heard of him. When he was just 19 years old, Beagle began to write his first novel, “A Fine and Private Place.” This happened in 1965. In the 70’s Beagle became a screenwriter and was responsible for the first screenplay of The Lord of the Rings. Two decades later he wrote a high-profile screenplay for specifically for episode 71 of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation entitled “Serek.” Beagle's screenwrting career distracted him from his career as a novelist, his career as a magazine nonfiction author, and his career as a short-story writer. However, in the mid '90s he returned his writing career to write fiction of all lengths and has since then he has produced new works at a regular pace since.

In addition to his own literary masterpieces, Beagle is heir to the literary masterpieces of well-known science fiction author Edgar Pangborn, Edgar's sister Mary, and their mother Georgia Wood Pangborn often helped him out with his writings. Ever since the year 2003 Beagle he has been working to bring the best of these three popular authors' fiction back into the world. In 2010 IDW Publishing Company officially released a six-issue comic book edition of The Last Unicorn. The collected hardcover edition was officially released in January 2011 and premiered on the #2 spot on the New York Times Hardcover Graphic Novel bestseller list.

Unfortunately In 1979 Beagle had a contract with ITC Entertainment which entitled Beagle to at least 5% of the profits in the animated property of The Last Unicorn and at least 5% of the gross revenues from any film-related merchandising The Last Unicorn sold. However due a breach in the contract from 2003 through 2011 Beagle was involved in a financial dispute with Granada over nonpayment that he was due from both the profit and merchandising shares. Due to this breach Beagle announced at a TV performance that both he and ITV had reached an agreement that was beneficial to all parties, and should make many of the fans of The Last Unicorn very happy. He then announced the first results of the deal which included a set of limited edition art prints of the original concept paintings from the film.

Beagle has won a ton of awards for his works. He has won the 1987 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for his works The Folk of Air, the 1994 Locus Award for best Fantasy Novel for his work The Innkeeper’s Song. Currently he has won the Nebula Award for his novelette Two Hearts in 2007 and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2011.
