Trudi Canavan Biography

Born on October 3rd, 1969 in Melbourne, Australia Trudi Canavan is a well known Australian fantasy author. She is best known for her best selling series The Black Magician and the Age of Five. After she decided to become a professional artist when she was younger, Trudi Canavan completed an Advanced Certificate at the Melbourne College of Decoration. Here she received an incredible award for Highest Aggregate Mark in Art Subjects.

Always having a fascination with writing since her early childhood Trudi’s writing career took off with the publication of her short story Whispers of the Mist Children. She has won many awards since that time such as the Aurealis Award, The Best Short Story Award and the Best Professional Artwork Award.

In 1995 Canavan started her business called The Telltale Art. This business was a freelance business specializing only on graphical design services. In that very same year Canavan began to work for Aurealis, a magazine dedicated to Australian Fantasy and Science Fiction. Canavan’s position turned out to be a do-it-all job. Not only was she in charge of art, but she was the cover editor, she read pretty much very manuscript that passed by her desk, she created web pages and she even stuffed envelopes. By taking on this job opportunity she was finally able to start writing in her spare time without having to worry about her bills not being paid. Canavan once stated that until the age of 25 she always dreamed of writing a novel but that she lacked the focus to do so. At the age of 25 she took several writing courses to work on refining her fiction and enhancing her writing skills. As she did this while she fought her way heroically through several rejections until finally a publishing company decided to publish her work.

Because of her experience Canavan often states that "the best way to improve your writing is to write... a lot." Unlike any other fantasy/science fiction author out there, Canavan is also very appreciative of fan fiction made by her fans.
