Lies of Locke Lamora Comments

Lies of Locke Lamora (Scott Lynch)

Lies of Locke Lamora is a grand adventure following the exploits of master thief and fraud, Locke Lamora. Leader of the Gentleman Bandits, Locke's flamboyantly carefree life of grand larceny comes to a crashing halt when someone who covets his talents forces Lamora to put his life on the line to protect all he holds dear...

A web of schemes and frauds weave the pattern that makes up the Lies of Locke Lamora. Scott Lynch establishes himself as a fearless storyteller, thrusting his characters into a world doused with intricate historical and cultural information. One of the most refreshing (and unique) novels to arrive on the fantasy scene, Lies of Locke Lamora is an entertaining read that delivers on every promise it makes. Those fantasy fans riding the new wave of fantasy, pioneered by George R. Martin, China Mieville, Steven Erikson, and Scott Bakker will be delighted with Scott's effort.

I loved this book. Scott had me pulled n from the very beginning and it only got better. I can't wait for Republic of Thieves to be released, but at this point I am just hoping it gets releases at all.

Subject: Unbelievable

The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies are the two greatest books I have ever read. I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed these books. Yes they are a little lighter fantasy than most of the others on this list but I totally think Scott Lynch is deserving of the spot he snagged.

Lynch's writing style is great. Unlike what others have said I think the juxtaposition of the current storyline and past storyline chapters was perfect. It made the pacing that much more exciting because Lynch knows exactly where to cut you off to keep you enthralled. I can honestly also say that I could never seem to tell what was going to happen next. The story he weaves is just.....great.

The first book was so good I phoned out of work to finish it. The second book delivered just as well. Admittedly some parts didn't work as well as they could have and some things needed tweaking but I walked away from it feeling thoroughly satisfied nonetheless.

Locke and Jean (and the rest of the Gentleman Bastards) are the perfect team. Their devotion to each other and to the job is the best part of the series. The laurel and hardy of fantasy thieves. Lynch made me care more about some of his characters than I do about some of my real friends.

All in all I would say that the third book can't come fast enough. Hopefully Scott can beat his demons and finish his series. I wish him and Locke all the best.

Subject: won't be finished

I enjoyed the first two books, but I have doubts the series will ever be completed. The author has serious personal issues and the delays have been nonstop. I would wait to see if the following books are released before being disappointed.

Subject: wouldn't make my top 25

Don't get me wrong, I liked this book. The prtagonist was cool and Lynch kept me turning the page in a fully furnished world. These are three things that make a great fantasy novel and this is. But I didn't feel that it was worthy of such a high position. Lynch made use of some of fantasy's most frequented conventions and at the end I really didn't feel that he left me wiith much. When we're talking about the best fantasy novels ever, I think substance should be a big criterion and this novel didn't give back much. It's a damn good tale but not good enough to make my top 25.

Subject: A favourite

I have to say that the Lies of Locke Lamora is one of my favourite books. I love the characters, the plot, and, most important to me, I adore Lynch's style. It's light yet edgy, and I would read it even though I wasn't intrigued by the plot. As this is an on-going series, I'm excited to see what will happen, and whether all the threads will be drawn together in the last one.
I simply can't wait for the third book.

Great characterization, plot lines, prose, action, love, death, violence, joy, tears, everything I love in a fantasy series for adults. A+

Subject: not that good

I read the first book. And while finding the world interesting and the charater to, it lacked exitment. For just when you were going "Oh whats gonna happen?" you'd then have to read a hole chaper on then they were kids, whitch would then explain how they would get out of the situation. Then your read the next bit with little exitment.
I started Book 2 and relised it was going to be exactly the same, but with more outragus situations for the chataters to get them selvs out of, and me the reader not having to worrie bout it because I new that the would. So I stoped reading.

I read this, and while it was good enough to finish, there are hundreds of better fantasy books. I can sum it up by saying that i was in no way even tempted to read the 2nd book, after i read the first, which for me is a must for a good book, which begins a series. READ a song of ice and fire. I read all four books so far in 20 days, my eyes hurt so much, but i couldn't stop...

Subject: Great

i LOVED this book it was like a dark version of oceans eleven and i know thats a shitty movie to compare this too but whatever.
just the characters were great
and i loved jean and his wicked sisters. one word BADASS
i recommened this book just for that fight so epic
that scene could be put into a movie version SSOOOOO easily and it flowed so well from the fight to a flashback.

dont see the point in sequels though
so im not going to ruin it by reading the others

Subject: Humorous Complexity

The first book was a great read. I loved the realism in the characters' personalities and the puzzling situations that they got themselves into. The second book was similarly entertaining, yet lacked that flare the first book had. Despite this, so far the series is far more interesting than some other series ranked higher on the list. I strongly recommend taking a look at this series.

Like the Dresden Files, the third book will tell how this series goes. The First book is amazing. The second book followed a very similar formula, and failed to introduce anything new and lasting. The third book has a ton of potential for awesome, especially considering the prologue up on Scott's page.

Scott brings all the elements together of a great read in this series. I highly recommend listening to it, he picked the best reader I have ever heard for these books and pulls it off perfectly. I listen to books during my commute daily and he sets the standard for readers IMO. I can't remember his name but I highly recommend getting an audible account and listening to this series.

Subject: first book great...

The first book of this blew me away. I bought it sight unseen in a bookshop because it was on special and promptly couldn't stop reading it. I couldn't stop laughing either, and I didn't anticipate a single plot twist - it was absolutely full of surprises. It WORKED.

Because of this, I bought the second book sight unseen. What a waste of time. The big surprise belly-flopped because the preceding story didn't back it up, the main villains appear to glower and remind everyone that they're there (but don't do anything else!), and the pirates are frankly not all that interesting.

I will still read the third book, but I won't buy it sight unseen. I'll wait for the library to get it, and then - if it's as good as LoLL, I'll buy it. If it's up to the standard of RSURS, I'll spend the money on chocolate and curl up on the couch with LoLL.

I really enjoyed this series and I cant tell you how many times I asked myself this question "how are they gonna get out of THIS fix?" It has a very Oceans 11 type feel as they go from one major heist to the next.

A great read.

I have not read every author on this list, but of the ones I've read Scott Lynch is the most gifted writer. Unfortunately I cannot contest this series' placing so far. The first two books are great, but I always have a nagging feeling that this author can set his sights wider than this. The quality of writing in these books probably exceeds any other on this list however, and they are also fun to read.

Subject: Mediocre

The first book has its moments, the second book plunges into mediocrity, in my opinion. I'm forcing myself to finish it, while I wait for Best Served Cold (Abercrombie) to come out in the US on July 29. The only reason I'll consider reading book three (and beyond, if applicable) is to find out if Lynch ever reveals anything about the long-vanished ancient civilization responsible for all the Elderglass cities. That's the only truly fascinating thing about the books to me. Locke and Jean could have been terrific... as it is, to me, they reek of wasted potential.

Subject: delightfully different!

I have been reading fantasy for more then 10 years, and this is by far one of the best. My husband has a rather typical view on the genre: wisards, dragons and boys becoming heroes. But I made him read LoLL, and he loves it! I can recomend it to everyone who has a fantasy-skeptic around
