The Dark Tower (Stephen King)

"
Spawned from the fertile mind of horror meister Steven King, The Dark Tower is a masterpiece of storytelling, seamlessly weaving different genres together into a compelling mix. Set in a stark, tired world that has "moved on," Roland of Giliad, the last of the fabled Gunslingers, journeys from landscape to landscape, from world to world on a quest to find and preserve from destruction the mythical Dark Tower, the nexus from which all things spawn. A western at its core, with a solid mix of horror, fantasy, and Sci-Fi, the Dark Tower saga is a towering feat of imagination; at seven books long, it is undisputedly King's Magnus Opus.

I especially recommend the fantastic AUDIOBOOK version which really bring to life the characters through the superb voice acting by the narrator. I'm a big fan of audiobooks and I find they are much more immersive then just reading a book. Just put it on your ipod and those monotonous chores are not so boring after all! I particularly like to listen to audiobooks when driving.

I've read half the top ten list and this is by far the worst of the lot. And I could likely say that if this was a top 100 list. Nothing happens, ever.

Outstanding storytelling, outstanding world building. Simply rivals Lord of the Rings in terms of scope, character development and world building. Amazing. Some may dislike it because it is so out of the ordinary fantasy writing; Actually it is a little bit shallow to call it fantasy: it has everything from horror to kitchen sink. Only a maestro like King could pull it off and he magnificiently did his duty. Particular highlights and the books 3 and 4 and the last one. Now a interim book which is expected to fill the void between books 4 and 5.

Thank you Sai King. You are one of the greatest writers of 20th and 21th century.

The ending to this series really hurt me. After about 3000 pages of fiction, I expected something with a little more closure, not to mention happiness.

Overall this series always had me hooked, though I do agree the last three books were rushed. Overall, the fourth was my favorite, gotta love backstory.

Subject: Favourite all-time book

The Gunslinger, the first in the series, is my all-time favourite book. I absolutely love it. I've read it a hundred times. Books 2 & 3 - Drawing of he Tree and Wastelands are close behind. The 4th - Wizard & Glass - disappointed me the first time I read it, but it grew on me. The other 2 get a little lost (just a little) but I'd take the entire series over any other any day of week. It took me about a year to read the last book - only because I just didn't want the series to end. To have that moment where you know what happens...it's all over (yes I know that's the point!). Absolute work of genius by Stephen King. His magnum opus. A collision of worlds. And I'm so happy it popped up on this list. Love this series. Love the Gunslinger. There's also gonna be a film of it...little scared how that's gonna turn out!

Subject: Great Series

Coming from an individual who loved LOTR, Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time, Terry Brooks Series all of them, I had no clue that I would fall for this series as deeply as I did. The series blew me away, as I was lost in the story, I cried, I cheered and was hurt by the characters. It was hard not to hate and love the protagonist of the story, as I did all the characters. It is a series I wish I could delete from my memory and read again to enjoy it once more.

Avoid this series. The first book will catch your attention, but the series will never payoff. I found myself plodding through book after book as the story drifted further into a senseless mess of Steven King self references. I was hoping for a redeeming ending, but what you will get is a painfully bad and insulting ending. Save your time and dollars, and try anything else on this list instead.

A love it or hate it..
and i loved these books. Im not a King fan, but he just has a way of getting inside your head that no other author I have read does, hence why he is so successful at horror. And this series really messes with your head.

It is such a strange tale and King structures it so that most of the time you have no idea what anything going on in the books has anything to do with anything. Throughout most of the series you don't even have any idea what the dark tower is, or why Roland is doing what he is doing (and he only has a vage idea what he is at).

But somehow the unknown becomes the attraction, and as the "how and why" becomes clearer the excitment of finding out what its all about grows. Well it grew for me anyway.

Loved it, not for everyone though, my advise is that even if your bored after a few books.. keep going! It'll be worth it in the end.

This is an outstanding series. THe problem is, if you aren't an avid reader of other Stephen King books you wont like them as much as this isn't really a stand alone series. You can read it, and not know this, but if you read other of Kings works, he actually ties all of his books together with this series. Book 2 to me could have been shortened or added to book 3. Other than that, for people who read alot of King, you can REALLY appreciate this. For people who don't - first read The Talisman, Black house, salems lot, the stand... others.. and you will see the true genius in these books.

Towards the end of the last book King interrupts the reader and asks them not to continue. Seriously.

I'm going to do you a bigger favor and tell you to just stop reading after the 4th book. The rest of the series is a complete waste of time.

Read the first one, which is amazing, and the fourth one, which is essentially a prequel and then never touch them again. The last three more aptly destroyed the series than if King had simply vomited all over the page. And the ending to last book, which I will not ruin for you and God bless you if you actually managed to get that far, made me want to re-run over Stephen King and finish the job that that one driver could not do that one fateful morning in Vermont.

Actually, I think the third one is the best of the series (followed by the 1st and 2nd), and would've been better than the rest of books combined if Mr King had not made the blunder of cutting the whole blaine part at the end and putting it in the fourth book. That was a decision that doesn't reflect well on Mr. King as a storyteller IMHO.
Personally, the 4th book is my least fav and completely overblown but the fans.

I read the first book and was taken, the second dragged though was definitely was worth a read. Then king slide away from fantasy towards horror. 100 pages stuck on an evil train?? I didn't finish.

This is the only set of books by King that I have ever read, and I must say that it did not make me want to read any more. Each book in the series rambled on, the plot severely changed direction several times, character development was poor, and nothing about the story line seemed to flow. And really, did he need to write himself into the story??

The series have some great moments and some really puzzling ones. Though not a King fan, I have enjoyed reading the series. It is better than so many of "Boy meets Dragon and defeats the evil king" kind of stories.

The book was a hard read but I loved it. The plot twisted and was very twisted at that. A different kind of Fantasy that's not like our own and that's what I love about it.

The Dark Tower books take a different path then your common fantasy novel that's why many dislike it. I started read back in my youth when it first came out and loved every minute of it. Hard read but somthing that leads up to shocking ending that gave a twisted gift to the reader. For a long time fan it maybe to much too bare to come to an end only to come across such a an ending yet for one such of Roland it was well fiting after all King is a horror writer can you expect none less from this gothic fantasy?

I loved this series, and I have to agree about the ending. When I was reading the last book I was worried that it would have an unsatisfying ending, but when I finished I thought the ending fit Roland perfectly!
