Small Niche? Looking for reading suggestions

I had a friend read it and she confirmed that it hits the proper beats for a Hero's Journey. I had doubted it because I tend to relate that to the Reluctant Messiah trope which this is not. It's more of an internal journey than quest. I'll be doing a 99c sale in May. I'll post about it then in...

It's 2018!! January 2018. What fantasy books are you reading?

I finished reading Senlin Ascends and I wasn't wowed. I guess this just isn't my genre. I felt like it was a cross between Terry Gilliam and Franz Kafka. He's in a place he can't leave. He doesn't know the rules. He can't plan. No one acts the way he expects them to. He's chasing after a person...

Criticisms and Commentary, or Being Suplexed by Readers

I always check the 1-2 star reviews when I'm looking at a book. The ones that start "I don't usually read this genre" are easy to discount. But The ones that are actual reviews sometimes work for me - not enough battles, too slow, too much explanation might be right up my alley.

Small Niche? Looking for reading suggestions

Absolutely. The 3rd book in my post-apocalyptic series took off and I thought I had "made it". Then sales dwindled off. When the 4th book came out sales were good and still trickle in, but no WOW moment there. As you said - so it goes.

Small Niche? Looking for reading suggestions

Thanks Nuomer. I've already learned that the first book doesn't sell that well until there are more to the series. But since this is a new genre for me, I need to do more research on the marketing side. Bane of my existence. Every think I've got a handle on it the market steps sideways. Sigh...

Small Niche? Looking for reading suggestions

I'm about to publish a book that I think might have a very small niche (is that redundant?). I'd appreciate any suggestions of books or authors that you think might be comparable. I'd like to take a look at them for marketing purposes. And probably read them, too. It's coming of age, sort of. A...

What Movie or TV show are you watching?

Just finished watching Episodes on Netflix. Hilarious. The writing is top notch. It's all about Hollywood shenanigans from a British perspective. With the perfect ending to the series. Loved it.

What Movie or TV show are you watching?

I think that movie should be in the dictionary as the definition of menace. Yikes, what an amazing piece of work. The scene where he was shaving scared the pants off me...because of all the excellent set up. Glad I saw it. Don't think I could ever watch it again.

Is having these as guidelines be too limiting?

I actually look for long series, because if I like a world and the people, I'm going to want to hang around longer. Also I don't always read one after the other. When I finish a book, sometimes I look for something different. I felt a need for something absurd and funny and got the next Thursday...

Criticisms and Commentary, or Being Suplexed by Readers

Is it already published? If it is, let it go and move on. If not, look at what is being said. Are several people complaining about the same thing? Can you clean up that problem easily? Or are they a bunch of small beans that no one agrees on? Bad reviews are painful, but they aren't always...

Sounds good. I'll have to check it out.

It's 2018!! January 2018. What fantasy books are you reading?

Just finish the Slow Regard of Silent Things. My biggest complaint is that it ended too soon. I love that world and didn't want to leave. And I thought his comments at the end about how this story was totally wrong were hilarious. It makes me want to reread the other two books, but I might wait...

Ursula K. Le Guin dead at 88

Loved her work. Some of them have stayed with me for a long time. The Dispossessed really affected me. And Left Hand of Darkness was amazing. Gone too soon.

It's 2018!! January 2018. What fantasy books are you reading?

Still needed something light so I got a Jasper Fforde out of the library. Something Rotten. He is so hilarious. Since I am an amateur genealogist, I especially love the fact that the main character's husband died when he was 2 years old (victim to an eradication, but she eventually gets him...

It's 2018!! January 2018. What fantasy books are you reading?

Just finished Veiled by Benedict Jacka. I usually enjoy a good romp with Verus, but this one had a little too much politics for me. There are several info dumps of - Let me explain - directed at a companion. And unfortunately a couple - I don't understand / sorry neither do I - set ups. That...
