It's September 2020: What fantasy book are you reading?

Just finished The Trouble with Peace, by Joe Abercrombie. IMO it's one of his best. Book 1 was pretty good, but this was better.

Pat Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle [spoilers] - the rambling review of an undecided reader

They (GRRM and Rothfuss both) don't owe us anything, but we don't owe them anything either. We're not obliged to be fans, to recommend their books to others, or to spend another cent on their future work. We're not obliged to hide our annoyance at them. We're free to request updates and to ask...

Looking for a classic fantasy adventure with trolls, giants, witches, and magic items!

Kings of the Wyld has an exceptional amount of traditional monsters and a very favorable ratio of quests and adventures to battles.

Pat Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle [spoilers] - the rambling review of an undecided reader

With the potential for a TV series in the wake of GoT, he's sitting on what could be a billion dollar product (at least, for the studio). Even if it doesnt bring in that HBO-level money, it's definitely worth at least a smaller fortune. At this point he should just treat it like any corporate...

here's other lists that might help: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/607.Most_Obvious_Tolkien_Imitators https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/16397.Top_Ten_Fantasy_Adventure_Novels The Icewind Dale Trilogy seems like a good fit.

Looking for a classic fantasy adventure with trolls, giants, witches, and magic items!

Like afa mentioned, one valid criticism of the genre has been the sheer number of "Tolkien-clones." The bfb list only has 10, and they seem to be judged based on quality more than based on similarity with LotR, but the public list at the bottom has 25 entries...

    Royal Road

I'm reading The Wandering Inn right now, and it's terrific. I was pretty disappointed by the first few chapters, because a lot of the main character's behavior didn't seem sensible (taking into account her circumstances). There were other flaws in the writing that pulled me out of the story...

    Royal Road

Has anybody else tried Royal Road? The entries in the site are mostly litrpg, wuxia/xianxia, etc. themed, sometimes with distressing anime tropes like harem-building. Some of the stories on there are pretty good. I liked Mother of Learning, Savage Divinity, and The Wandering Inn a lot! The...

If there was a brand new Fantasy TV show

Seems like there were a bunch of fantasy books over the last few years that wanted me to know that horses like to puff out their chests to avoid girth tightening, so it's important to wait until they exhale before tightening the girth strap. Interesting enough the first time I read it, but not...

If there was a brand new Fantasy TV show

Many of my favorite (and some of the most popular) fantasy books have a no/low-magic protagonist and near omnipotent magical antagonists. Sometimes the main chars have magical friends, but they're not typically PoV characters so it's still fine if the main char is ignorant of magical mechanics...

If there was a brand new Fantasy TV show

I think the best way to make magic work in fantasy in general, and especially for TV/movies where the pace needs to be faster, is with protagonists with little or no magic and antagonists with the heavy magic. That way there's no obligation to dedicate screen time to the underlying mechanisms...

If there was a brand new Fantasy TV show

nice prompt. It's a tough question. fwiw, there's about a thousand shows on portal fantasy, but they're anime (isekai). Not that I'm opposed to it; Heroes Die is one of my favorite novels. I'd prefer adult protagonists. The wunderkind crap makes every adult in the world seem incompetent. I'm a...

Forthcoming Fantasy and Science Fiction books in 2020

I wasn't too thrilled when I scanned the list, but upon reflection...with books by Abercrombie, Sanderson, Lawrence, etc. coming out, it's probably an above average year.
