Marc Turner. Author. Assassin. Deep sea diver.

My bad, realized that my reply was probably bit too harsh, but I just have really high expectations from fantasy books these days. :sorry:

Ok I will be entirely honest about When The Heavens Fall....It took far too long to get going. I usually appreciate word-building, but there is a limit to which you can keep doing it. Couple this with an unimaginative magic system which mostly boiled down to the overuse of the words "death...

April 2016 - What Fantasy Books Are You Reading?

Well, unfortunately it is generally agreed that the series goes downhill from here. Not steep downhill, but definitely downhill.

The Last Mortal Bond by Brian Staveley

I actually appreciate endings like this. It's a much harder path to take, but I've read way too many series in which authors somehow pull out a utopia after 3 books of bloodshed. Victory comes at a cost, and that cost should be reflected in the endings.

    Snakewood by Adrian Selby

I tried to read this book...I really did. Its got all the requirements of a great fantasy; unique magic system, well thought out world, some excellent character potential, gritty writing etc etc But it is in the execution that it just lets itself down..It takes so damn long for the plot to get...

    Some help with "Urban Fantasy."

Both of these are quite dark books, and are much, much better than Dresden (imo). Nightwise is arguably the darker, but the Felix Castor books are a completed series (although I really hope I get to read another), but both definitely have similarities.

March 2016 - What fantasy books are you reading?

These books actually get better as they go on, if you are willing to overlook the somewhat cliched tropes and slightly overpowered characters. Plus its like 5 books so it'll keep you occupied till the next GRRM release. (No, no it won't)

The Last Mortal Bond by Brian Staveley

I got this last evening, and (inadvisably) spent most of the evening and wee hours of the morning ploughing through this book. Definitely worth it. This book brings to a close one of the better fantasy series out there to have come out in the past 3 years (Seems like only yesterday that I read...

Did not need that reminder that I will never read another Bartimaeus Book ever again. *wipes tear from eye*

    Those Below by Daniel Polansky

This is the last book of Daniel Polansky's duology, the Empty Throne Series, and I was definitely hyped after reading the previous book, which I thought was excellent...even if it was freaking expensive :P This book, for me, delivered in all ways that could be delivered. Polansky's writing...

March 2016 - What fantasy books are you reading?

I've read a couple of books recently: The Thief Who Pulled on Trouble's Braids by Michael McClung: Completely unrelated to the blog post (but coincidentally nonetheless), I read about this here (Blog-off held by Mark Lawrence) and I wholeheartedly agree with both the blog and Lawrence on this...

City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett

Aaagggh I forgot I had read this. Robert Jackson Bennett continues to impress with his masterful writing in this sequel. It's a heady mix of gritty, unique, dark and somewhat investigative fantasy, impossibly blended together with some sick worldbuilding and unique characters to deliver a...

    Morning Star by Pierce Brown

Since nobody posted a thread about this, I thought I'd do it here. Technically this is not fantasy, but neither is this series full blown SF either. This book continues the breakneck pace that is the trademark of this series. So much happens in the space of a 100 pages that it leaves you in a...
