It's June 2020: What fantasy book are you reading?

Finished The Goblin Emperor. It's got many charms but, if I ever gull someone into letting me teach writing, I'm going to use it as a prime example of a) How Not To Plot A Book and b) The Value of Condensing Characters. I also suspect that what I'm pointing at as bugs are deliberate choices to...

It's May 2020: What fantasy book are you reading?

Finished a re-read of GGK's The Summer Tree and loved it more than when I started. I think once you start building off the implications he leaves hanging around, it's an incredible story, and it hits a lot of my sweet spots. I doubt your memory plays tricks with you; more likely we put...

Funny how it goes - I found The First Law darker. I think that's because I find the quest in Best Served Cold more sympathetic, and it was more even in tone from beginning to end, with The First Law being more about subverting expectations.

It's May 2020: What fantasy book are you reading?

Read The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner yesterday. Still sorting my feelings out about it, but my feeling is it seems to have one strength - very readable - but isn't really above average in any other category. Also... I'm working from home at the moment and as someone with an hour long commute...

It's April 2020: What fantasy book are you reading?

I'd say it's a good borrow from a library punt for sure.

It's April 2020: What fantasy book are you reading?

Re-read Thief of Time. Halfway through a bunch of other stuff that's not really grabbing me. Re Best Served Cold - Its my favourite Abercrombie. I kinda have a weird relationship with The First Law - some parts of it are great, but a lot of it feels cliche or dull or devoted to bleh characters...

Some. I'm obsessed by the TV show Line of Duty and love Lindsay Davis' Falco novels. Also a big fan of the translations of Camilleri's Montalbano. Lot of other good stuff out there, although none I love. John Le Carre's Call for the Dead is a very good murder mystery too.

I hear you Silvion. I'm also in a reading slump. Been about two and a half months since I finished an original read.

Post your own Top 25 Best Fantasy Books

My update got chewed up by my browser crashing but I found I was moving a lot of books around. I'd also love to do kinda everything and maybe I will, but damn that'd be a project.

Post your own Top 25 Best Fantasy Books

Just read your list and first I thought you'd decided to do a 97 book list starting from a bottom and I was super impressed. Then I realised it was less hardcore than that, but still an impressive effort. Think I'm going to update mine now. Did much change for you?

If there was a brand new Fantasy TV show

Hear hear. To my mind there's a level of focus on historical realism and faithful representation that has reached somewhat unhealthy levels and is slightly losing track of the possibilities of the fantasy genre.

If there was a brand new Fantasy TV show

Tbf, just because the wider viewing public has little taste for detailed magic doesn't mean your big wished for idea couldn't. I agree it seems an obstacle for popularity (although the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina spends a lot of time delving into what makes its spells work, albeit with...

If there was a brand new Fantasy TV show

What would you want it to look like? Got curious about this idea because most Fantasy TV talk seems to revolve around "What series do you want adapted", "Who would you cast as X" etc.etc. And I feel like that's kind of a shame as there's a ton of stuff you could do with a brand new page. So if...
