It's April 2019: What fantasy book are you reading?

Recently, I finished the following books. Storm Glass by Jeff Wheeler. This was an enjoyable book, though it was definitely geared toward a younger audience than I expected going in. Good enough that I am looking to read the rest of the series at some point. Dragon Storm and Dragon Rider by...

It's March 2019: What fantasy book are you reading?

I really enjoyed Dawn of Wonder. I've also loved pretty much everything by Michael J. Sullivan. Senlin Ascends was great. I was a bit disappointed in Queen of Fire by Ryan, but I loved the first two books of the series. I still need to read his Draconis Memoriae series (I hope I spelled that...

Upward price creep for Kindle fantasy novels

I think it's publishers hoping that people will not care what format they get the book in and will be willing to pay the same for an e-book as they would for a hardback. That way, the publishers can make a bigger profit because there are pretty much no production costs (obviously there's still a...

It's March 2019: What fantasy book are you reading?

I'm currently working on four books. I've been making a concerted effort to read more and more indie titles. It started as a desire to see what's doing well in self-published fantasy to help with my own efforts. The surprising part is how much I'm enjoying most of them. Many of them don't quite...

I know just what would cure that. A reread of The Way of Kings. ;)

I appreciated Happy Hour in Hell for the same reasons, but a lot of people really don't like it.

I seem to share the same feelings on Blood Song and Tower Lord. I think Blood Song was a 9.5/10 and Tower Lord was a 9/10 for me. Queen of Fire was more like a 7/10. I've heard that his new series is good. I'll probably pick it up since the last book in the trilogy is coming out soon.

    Favourite Fantasy Cliches

Come to think of it, I like pretty much any trope done well. I don't care if I've seen it a thousand times before, as long as the author puts their own spin on it. I'm least fond of a lot of Grimdark tropes. It's just not my preferred type of fantasy.

    Favourite Fantasy Cliches

I enjoy heroes coming from humble beginnings. I enjoy villains who may not be as evil as you think.

I will say that the Long Price Quartet gets a lot better as it goes on. It's still a slower-paced series, but the pace picks up in later books. And I really enjoyed Planetfall.

I read Rage of Dragons recently, and it definitely reminded me a bit of Blood Song. For a lot of the book (mostly the training segments), I wasn't so sure I'd love it, but the string of action sequences at the end made it an amazing read.

That makes me feel much better about the continuity errors I find when editing my own books. They're never quite that bad, and usually I can fix them in a few minutes.

That reminds me. I still need to read the third book. Liked the first two quite a bit.

It’s April 2018: What Fantasy book are you reading?

Not really that similar to The Wheel of Time in my opinion. Still a great book, but definitely grittier and more action-heavy than the Wheel of Time. The story becomes epic as it goes along, but it's not as epic as The Wheel of Time. The Night Angel trilogy is one of my favorites. If anything...

You should give it a shot. It's very accessible science fiction that doesn't get bogged down in technical details.
