July 2011 - What fantasy book are you reading?

I finished The Codex Alera by Jim Butcher the beggining of the month and Absolutely loved it! Now I am working on The DragonCrown War by Michael Stackpole. The first book was a prelude that happened 25 years before the Trilogy. It was written in first person memior form, so that kind of killed...

    Books with magical creatures?

Ok I want to read some more fantasy but would like to find something where the Magical Creatures are not just window dressing. Anything where a non-human plays a role in the story would be nice. Unicorns, faries, talking horses, elves, dragons, etc... Something besides all human all the time...

March: What Fantasy book are you reading?

Uhh I have read the first 7 Dresden novels and at no point do I remember Harry being a super model. Most of the time he is beat up, scruffy looking and looks like he hasnt slept in 3 days(most of the time he hasnt). If I remember he is freakishly tall. I am 6'1 and cannot imagine wanting to be...

February: What fantasy book are you reading?

I had only read through the first two books a couple of years ago and finally had to reread them and read through the first 4. The 5 book starts a new storyline in the same world. I will hopefully pick up the next 4 soon at the Borders that is closing nearby. The store there is currently 20% off...

Janurary - What Fantasy Book Are You Reading?

I vote for The Runelords series. I am rereading the second one now. I have read the first three but am now rereading them so I can read the fourth. I think they are wonderful. Epic battles, great characterization, moral dilemas, and the magic system is so unique that it really allow Farland to...

Recluce Series - wha do you think and where should i start?

I read The Magic of Recluce around 10 years ago and was definitely confused. I know he wanted to make his own fantasy series that was not derivative of Tolkien, but I was a little confused as to what was going on. I know that Modesitt has 16 books and some people say that you should read them in...

Help Me Assemble New Lists: Best Standalone Fantasy Books and Best Fantasy Books2010

For stand alone books, Storm Front, the first Harry Dresden novel by Jim Butcher, certainly qualifies. So does Legend by David Gemmel. In fact all of the Drenai saga books by Gemmel are stand alone. The same goes for the Mithgar series by McKiernan.

I like Elves and Dwarves, what can you reccomend?

Hello. I know people like to bash anything Tolkienesque as unoriginal and so last season, but I happen to really like stories with Elves and Dwarves and the like. They don't have to be neccesarilly Tolkien's epic story telling style, but Elves and Dwarves would be nice. I have read a couple of...
