The book you don't like that most everyone else seems to like ...

@Andrew.J Read The Magicians and watched the TV series. Liked both. I have seen some reviews where there seems to be a suggestion that the books are saying "whatever you might be tempted to think, the grass is not always greener on the other side." I suppose I viewed them as a "coming of age"...

It's February 2017. What fantasy book(s) are you reading?

I must admit that I would not have expected that from good fantasy or the write up I read of that book. Thanks for highlighting it.

Jack Vance - The Dying Earth series

It was certainly an interesting book to read. I think that Vance built his future post-apocolyptic world with magic and strange creatures very well. What I also found entertaining was his amusing portrayal of some of people's baser behaviour. For example wanting to have something better than...

    2017 Reading Resolutions

My resolution is going to be to try to read regularly, continue with some new (to me) authors and some sequels to series which I have already started. I don't know how many books I will get through, but will probably set myself a modest Goodreads challenge target and try to better it, so I...

The Woven Ring by M.D. Presley @Matticus Primal

Wow ! A bit late to this thread, but what a great review by @Elvira. Looking forward to the next book and perhaps learning more about Carmichael, who must be one of the nastiest characters I would like to see get his comeupance ! I was also interested to discover that some of the characters...

November 2016 - What fantasy books are you reading?

Recently finished The Eagle's Flight by D.E. Olesen. It's an epic medieval fantasy told through many povs about a kingdom "Adalmearc", whose king has passed away leading to some of the noble families plotting and fighting to gain control, while one of the outer provinces has already been...

The Eagle's Flight, First Chronicle of Adalmearc by D E Olesen

Wow, 300 lines is impressive ! I look forward to reading that. Yes, I felt that separating the plots in Adalrik and Haethiod into different parts of the book worked very well. Whilst you were starting afresh with a new set of characters in Haethiod, I think that it helped the continuity of the...

The Eagle's Flight, First Chronicle of Adalmearc by D E Olesen

@Elvira I liked all of the chronicles, but as @Tanniel pointed out the 3rd one concluded some of the story arcs and set the series up nicely for the following ones. Tothmor was a great read too though, and especially enjoyed Leander, Troy and Hubert's characters. Those birth words really did...

The Eagle's Flight, First Chronicle of Adalmearc by D E Olesen

Have now read "The Eagle's Flight" by D.E. Olesen. (@Tanniel) This book is about the history of Adalmearc and its people, beautifully described in 3 chronicles written by a scribe after the recorded events occurred. As such they may contain some conjecture regarding precise details although...

    Have You Read This Book?

It's well written with good dialogue, good action and a sense of humour in places. The descriptions of the various settings were fine, and overall I found it to be an enjoyable "light" read. So, I think that you probably would find it to be a refreshing read in-between more complex stuff.

    Have You Read This Book?

Read the 1st book "Promise of Blood" and enjoyed it a lot. It has an imaginative flintlock magic system and the setting is reminiscent of the French Revolution. Had some good characters, but did receive a bit of criticism for some "deus ex machina" with one of them. Overall felt that it was a...
