    Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards series

After being recommended The Lies of Locke Lamora a dozen times on these forums I bought it. I finally got around to reading it and finished it about two weeks ago and I loved every moment of it. For my birthday, my husband surprised me with Red Seas Under Red Skies and The Republic of Thieves. I...

BFB's 2014 Reading Challenge (Discussion thread)

Whether it was done on purpose or because of laziness (not likely because small details turn out to be somewhat or drastically significant) or whatever it works to the story's favor. It definitely makes the bondsmagi seem more ominous and threatening.

BFB's 2014 Reading Challenge (Discussion thread)

The Bondsmagi definitely use sorcery. Its actually left to be a bit mysterious on the actual mechanics but if they know your true name you'd better run and hide! Thanks for the clarification! I don't want to assume too much on the challenge and read a bunch of books that don't count!

BFB's 2014 Reading Challenge (Discussion thread)

Regarding wizard/witch, do the bondsmagi in Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards series count? They do perform sorcery, but I want to make sure they count. They are you "typical" wizard or witch. And just to further clarify...would Bayaz from 1st law count? Or do they needs be like a Gandalf or...

    Audiobook voices

I don't listen to it much anymore. I mostly just listen to music my husband likes. When I'm in the car I don't listen to anything if its just me. Mostly because I have a 5 minute drive to work and a 10 minute drive pretty much anywhere I go so I don't bother. When I'm at home alone doing...

    Audiobook voices

LMAO at the thread hijack. I used to listen to metal...but it was black metal. Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth and the likes. The stuff you guys all probably cringe at. And for the record...Cradle of Filth's cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name is by far the heaviest metal version and the best version...

    Audiobook voices

Fist Law is one that I was suggesting to my husband and I thought it was awful. :( He couldn't do it either and he likes audiobooks. I'm actually quite sad because I REALLY want him to experience First Law. It's something that he would enjoy but he doesn't like to read. I guess I just make up...

    Audiobook voices

Whyyyyyyyyy?!?! Okay to clarify...as part of the challenge, I started looking for audiobooks and found that I am extremely turned off by the reader's voices and their pronunciations. Does anyone else feel this way? Also, and I hope no one takes offense, but why are all the fantasy books read in...

    fantasy future

I personally wasn't that enthralled with AOT. It was severely lacking compared to its predecessors. I definitely agree there. Also, I think Kill La Kill would've been bigger in the US if it weren't following in the wake of AOT. I'll grant you that a lot of anime does have a moe character to...

Do you play? Family games or advanced gamer?

I play D&D 3.5 with my husband and his best friend. I usually end up DM even though I find it really tedious. I use online dungeon and monster generators to make things progress faster. We also don't have a complete set of 3.5 books. We have 3.0 books mixed with 3.5 so I have to check the...

    fantasy future

I'm a pretty big anime fan...not so much on manga though I do enjoy a few from time to time. For its evolution I see it going more toward a dark and "gritty" feel even in the PG14 sections. Mind you its anime so there's a ton of sub-genres like "slice of life" that will always be just that. But...

Haha okay :) I have plenty of books with maps in them. I had started a manga series a while back and thought I might be able to use the second book to cover 17, 10, 19, and 12.

The first book you read, or other significant hallmarks that may show your age.

This is kind of sad, I have no idea what the first chapter book I read was. I started reading at a very early age because my parents had a subscription to that Dr. Seuss book club thing. I was reading chapter books by the time I was in kindergarten. Of course, they were super kiddy books and not...

Question, does manga count? I hope so because it would cover about 4 or 5 on the list for me.

Thanks for the follow Tom (BFB)! I don't post much on Twitter. I think I've got a whole 12 followers lol. But I do follow a few authors. Joe Abercrombie is a really funny guy.
