It's October 2018: What fantasy book are you reading?

Haven't read Blackwing and as before I'm put off by how tiny the book is. I'm also not big on Black Company. Never finished the first trilogy.

Chugging forward with In The Ruins. Work being hell has stalled my progress somewhat, but it's easing off so I have a bit more energy for reading. Not sure what I'm going for after this - got Locke Lamora book 2, Mistrwraith 1, a GGK (Arbonne) that I've had a year and not gotten around to... Any...

    I just bought...

Found a second hand copy of Janny Wurts' 'Curse of the Mistwraith' at Tesco so I bought it. £1. The girth of the tome gives me hope that it bears a most Ready alacrity.

Potentially. Also bear in mind it's word count over pages.

Mmm, not quite. First Law arguably doesn't have much story because what story there is effectively serves as a vehicle for the characters (the story, really, comes down to 'let's get the macguffin'). . I've always seen it as more of an experiment in character studies - overall a successful one...

Thin books being rushed is an observation born of experience. Even if it's really good, if I get pulled in and then it ends due to just being tiny, I feel short changed. There's no winners with small, girthless tomes.

To me, "less fluff" directly correlates to "rushed". I absolutely LOATHE when a book rushes, and for a short book to reach some sort of conclusion with such a lack of girth, it will be rushing. It's actually one of the main reasons I've not got on with the Witcher books yet - they're so...

The massive hype is pretty exhausting, especially given that the book was just a letdown in every regard. I'll reiterate that I managed to slog to the end of The Wank of Kings and we all know my thoughts on that one, and KOTW was a DNF. Anyway, I've finally started reading something again...

    Glen Cook’s Glittering Stone (spoilers)

I never actually finished TBC - Had book 3 ordered but it never arrived and I never felt compelled to chase it up. How's the second set of books?

It's September 2018: What fantasy book are you reading?

I got halfway into KOTW and DNF'd it because the pace was far, far too fast. That and it just fell entirely flat for me in terms of world, characters and story. I directly blame it for my current reading funk because it was so, so hyped and delivered exactly nothing. In this it has a...

I hope not because that sort of thing is a cheap marketing gimmick used to make excessively tenuous links between books in the hopes of generating additional sales. See: Ole Sandy

So I've got issue 1 of New Game! to go through and then finish up Killing Slimes. After that, maybe finish Crown of Stars or give GGK a whirl? I'm not enticed to go near anything current at all just now.

Too dark? No Slogs for yoooooooooooou. Also, I can't really see how the anime would come over as random at all; the story is very structured and quite straightforward. The manga, so far, has followed the anime without deviation. RE Karsa: Whilst I of course love him, the fact that the...

Slammed through Issues 3-3 of Re:Zero manga. Now this is how you do dark as the abyss.

It's August 2018: What fantasy book are you reading?

I have to disagree there. All the new stuff coming out lately (i.e. the last couple of years) is zoomy, thin, fast-paced and lacks that critical girth that I need in fantasy. I can only think of one 2018 release that's even on my radar, bar that, it looks like an empty year for fantasy. You...

The books are the right length and the right tonality too. I really don't like the current industry shift toward short, thin, overly fast-paced stuff. Although on that subject I'm reading the Re:Zero manga again and fuuuuuuuck it got dark as hell in issue 3-3. Even moreso than usual.

Palate cleansers are sometimes necessary. What I might do soon is sit and see what TRP stuff I have set to go - Probably Arbonne or Crown of Stars.
