I’ve never read LOTR. Just watched the movies. I know two guys who read the books and told me to just stick with the movies as they cut out the poetry and some weak things.
The movies are remarkably true to the books which surprised and pleased me. Of course they had to cut out much of the lore but it's worth reading, although you know all the endings.

The Silmarillion is $2.99 today.

Paternus: Wrath of Gods (The Paternus Trilogy Book 2) by Dyrk Ashton is $1.99 today. I have heard nothing but good things about this series.

The Skinner (A Spatterjay Novel Book 1) by Neal Asher is $1.99.
Grab that Spatterjay book, Khartun, that series is even better than The Polity. It occurs after Polity and refers to it in a general sense but it is fantastic. It also is the basis for all the books Asher has written since. You haven't said anything about Shadow of the Scorpion so I thought you didn't get on with it.

A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall is $2.99 today http://a.co/d/2AXHzve
Haven't heard anything about this book here.

And thanks Khartun for the Paternus rec. It sounds great! And the first book is also $1.99 now.
