Trying to get some pals to take stumbling first steps in D&D. They're keen but we're all knocking 40 (and a lot with kids) so finding the time tricky...
Used to do a bit of;
Vampire: Masquerade
Heroes, Unlimited
Star Wars
AD&D

Have played AD&D, RoleMaster, Arduin, RuneQuest, Heroes, Call of Cthulhu
Favorite is RoleMaster, a percentile system (d100)

Excuse the ignorance but what is a D20 RPG? I know what an RPG is but what is D20?

Dx is shorthand in RPG where D stands for dice (or die) and x stands for the number of sides it has. So the instructions might say roll 2 D8 which means roll 2 eight sided die.

D20 means the system is based on rolling 20 sided dice (icosahedron). Typically character stats (like strength, agility, intelligence, wisdom) are between 2 and 18 (for humans)
A D100 system is based on straight procentiles. Typically one rolls 2 different D10 dice with one representing the 10's place and one the 1's place. Character stats in a d100 system are between 1 and 100.
Dungeons and dragons and Pathfinder are D20 systems. Call of Chtulu and Rolemaster are D100 systems.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. Sounds fascinating and fun.
