I was wondering what kind of music you guys are listening to. Bands/Artists anything you like. And what are your favorite fantasy/science fiction - themed songs (if you have any). Personally, I prefer listening to hard rock/metal and bands like Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin. As for the second question, everyone here MUST listen to Nightfall in Middle-Earth by Blind Guardian inspired by Tolkien's Silmarillion.

Right now my favourite band is Foster the People.

But at any given time these are the bands I listen to the most
Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins, The Strokes, Kaiser Chiefs, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire.

I have the Game of Thrones Theme song (rock version) as my phone's ringtone.

Also love the theme song to Firefly which is also the best show ever.

Depending on what I'm thinking about writing is what I typically listen to, and what writings I am currently working on, is what will decide what kind of music I will be listening to. If I'm planning the overall story, or an individual scene / chapter also has an effect on which music I'll be listening to at the time. Writing and Music go practically hand in hand with me. I listen to music nearly all the time. Honestly, I'm surprised I have any friends. I won't be surprised when I need hearing aids at a younger age, though.

These days, I mostly listen to Hard Rock, Thrash, and Nu Metal with some electronic ambience on the side. (Pretty much the polar opposite kind of metal that you are listening to Sotiris) Obviously, it's because I'm laying out the stages to write a darker novel.

Though, I can listen to pretty much all types of mainstream music. (With a wide range from Jazz to Country.) Here's some of the playlists I've currently got.

Favorite Fantasy Themed Music - Electro House gives me a strong "Magical" fantasy vibe. (In line with Tolkien.)

Bioblitz, Joe Garston, and Mord Fustang are three big ones.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umu49tFWCnE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa7ngAx6ULo

Some Pop Rock, Raggae, and Alternative Music does this for me as well. However, in these current songs I'm listening to them for a coming-of-age part (The entire first act [5ish chapters?]) in the novel I'm currently writing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuwxZSIS__4 (For fantasy, usually.)

Dark SF Ambience (What I'm listening to currently.) - Starcraft/ Starcraft 2 OST's. - For the current overall premise of the story. I'm currently working on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgTLffz_Wb4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcpzDUlz9eE

Nu-Metal and Thrash for the darker action and suspense scenes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEBv3eB1yjk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WL5IRrhl20

Since this is a story of redemption that I plan on writing...Slide Guitar, Acoustic, and perhaps some rock.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD2HEFnW5S8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1RzSm2z2Yg

This isn't strictly business, though, I will listen to what I still want to listen to. However, I'll typically think about those particular parts of the story while listening to these differing playlists. My music collection is pretty extensive.

I will listen to nearly anything. Despite this 'anything' claim, I do still tend to cut stuff out that I deeply morally object to. Not that I can't tell the difference between theatricality/entertainment and actual malice. But I tend not to listen to gangster rap (or most rap, lol) or most kinds of black metal. Otherwise, I'll listen to pretty much anything someone links me, as long as they don't overload.

Favorite genre is somewhere in the realm of Power Metal - Symphonic Metal - Melodic Death Metal. These tend to be able to suit almost any mood I might be in, as well as being good to write to (for me, at least), which is pretty important.

Favorite bands:
Avantasia
Nightwish
Insomnium
Wintersun
The Jokerr (kind of the odd man here, as this is more some vague kind of pop/hip-hop)

(most of those are long songs; this isn't really a conscious choice, those just happen to be the first songs I heard by each)

I haven't bought any music for 5+ years, with two exceptions: one album by the Black Keys and one by the Dharma Gypsys (think yoga music but with guitars).

My favorite bands are Rancid, Social Distortion, and Nirvana. But I also like the Clash, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Pearl Jam, NOFX, and some other random punk and grunge. (Probably explained by the fact that I spent most of the 1990s in high school and college.) Although it's not part of the core of what I listen to, Jon Snow's list isn't bad, either.

I absolutely must have it quiet when I write, though. No music or television of any kind.

I used to listen to Rancid and Nirvana, but a bit over them. 90's rock was were it's at.

adding to my list i would say, RHCP, Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, Muse, Radiohead. Oh and I totally forgot before to list The Cure and Depeche Mode.

A fellow fan! Also, you should check out Eluveitie for some really good Melodic/Folk Death Metal.

@Sneaky Burrito. El Camino was an awesome album. They were a revelation for me.
@Jon Snow. Muse are an addiction. Matt Bellamy is a musical genius and believe me that is not an overstatement. As for Depeche Mode, this year they are coming to Greece. I'm gonna be there! You should try listening to some Gorillaz too, if I get your taste in music.

Yeah. I actually discovered Insomnium through a recommendation on the video for Inis Mona. :p

I like Eluveitie, but they seem to be very hit or miss. Sometimes they make great songs, and other times they are just kind of abrasive and bleh. They are better when they stick to the folksy end of spectrum.

Oh I like Nightwish
They really are leagues above anything else in that genre.

I used to listen to metal (symphonic/power/prog/folk including Kamelot, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Leaves Eyes, Symphony X) and still do, but I'm sort of leaning toward orchestral soundtracks and such now (think Two Steps from Hell and LOTR soundtrack). I don't actually like the style of NIME by Blind Guardian, but damn it's a really good album and the melodies are amazing, just wish there wasn't so much high pitched...man-squealing.
On a separate note...it's really hard to find Tolkien inspired songs that aren't metal :(

My 3 favourite albums are:

Elliott Smith - XO
Pearl Jam - Vs
Hell Is For Heroes - The Neon Handshake

Elliott Smith is my all time favourite artist. Like a lot of stuff similar to that, mainly American singer songwriters like Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, Josh Rouse ... but grew up through the grunge phase and still listen to Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam ... and Britpop .. was a massive Oasis fan and loved bands like Longpigs, Mansun, Echobelly and Pulp.

Big music fan =) ... My first true passion!

Just heard a song on the radio and it hit me like a truck.I had do search a bit but since the lyrics really stuck with me it wasn't too bad. It instantly made me think of a fantasy book. I don't want to tell which yet since i want you guys to listen to it and maybe we'll come to the same conclusion. Granted you've read aformentioned book...

I though of Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker.

I've got quite a wide taste in music. What I listen to really depends on what I'm doing at the time.

My workout playlist at the moment has some Shinedown, Drowning Pool, Fort Minor, Rob Bailey, Nickleback, Slipknot, Metallica and Three Days Grace on it. When I'm out and about, I mainly listen to some indie, country, rock etc. e.g. Ed Sheeran, Brantley Gilbert, Oasis, Lee Brice, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Kaiser Chiefs. Kid Rock is probably one of my all time favourite artists. The guy has a pretty diverse set of talents when it comes to making music. I also like discovering new British Hip Hop acts as I can't get behind the mainstream stuff.

As for what makes me think of fantasy... I really don't know. Amy Lee's voice is pretty haunting.

Sotiris, I am a huuuuge blind guardian fan. Nightfall was great, but they do songs about other fantasy novels and series as well. have you heard the song "wheel of time" from their new album? Its about rand. Amazing song. They also will eventually be coming out with an orchestral album about the lord of the rings. Also, if you like blind guardian, check out demons and wizards, its the singer of blind guardians other band, some great stuff there.

GhostWarrior, if you enjoy the stylings of amy lee, you should definatly check out lacuna coil and within temptation. Both bands blow evenescence out of the water in my opinion.

I've mainly been listening to Vocaloid music recently. My favorite producer makes great series with her songs, so those are some of my favorites. <3 Lately, though, I've been listening to the Kagerou Project songs, which is more of an urban fantasy song series.

I also really love Yellowcard, for a more general one... And for artists that sing more fantasy-ish songs that I love, there's Within Temptation and Nightwish. I also love Flyleaf's Arise. :D

Arya Stark

Philosophizes with Kellhus

I like Eric Prydz/Cirez D/Pryda (all the same guy) which is house/techno/progressive house
Deadmau5
Adam Beyer
Audrey Napoleon
Calvin Harris
Cradle of Filth
Dimmu Borgir
Slipknot (albums 1 and 2 only)
A whole onslaught of music from the 90s including everything from boy bands to Korn and Manson
Zepplin
Pink Floyd
Johnny Cash
And I even like some rap like Lil Jon and the Eastside boys and the YingYang twins

I'd say I have a pretty diverse taste in music but its mostly old stuff. I don't like current pop, rap, rock. Basically the only current music I like is legitimate techno. I don't mean that as a general term for electronic dance music either. I mean the stuff you might hear in the disqos in Germany.
