The Wheel of Time tv-series

The weird thing about Jordan writing women is that the series was very progressive in that by the time it was done women had more dialogue than men. Many women are in positions of power with vital roles and they didn’t take a backseat to men (Nynaeve, Moiraine, Egwene, etc). And then he undoes all that stuff by having them naked for any ritual and having 3 women sleep with Rand lol. I think the sea faring women were topless on the sea too. Definitely teenage boy stuff lol.

@rudyjuly2 I'm gonna be honest. From the trailers and teasers I've seen so far, it doesn't look like $10M well spent. It should look better imo.
I get what you mean. I mentioned in a previous comment about how the outfits looked a little amaterurish. But I will reserve judgement until we see the final product. Behind the scenes and unedited clips can give a totally different impression of a scene compared to the final version that will actually air (one of the reasons I don't actually like looking at them too often).

I'm becoming a bit more skeptical myself with each new release. To the positive side I have really talked myself into not being too bent on how it matches the books which I normally would be. To the negative it doesn't seem that appealing so far based on some of these sneak peaks. I'd say my excitement has gone from a 9 at its peak to about a 7 or so now.
And this is the second reason I don't like looking at them. I feel it actually takes away from the immersion and lowers my excitement.

Some points of concern for me:

- Seems like they recasted Mat for season 2 and no one is transparent as to why. Weird. It's a major character and I don't really like companies recasting main characters, as it breaks immersion.
Yeah, I don't like that, specially the part about no one saying why. It's just... weird. It's also weird that it's happening to a show that hasn't even aired, yet. So as soon as we start watching, we kind of have to keep in our mind not to get too attached the actor playing Mat because he won't be around in season 2.

- I'm getting a bit apprehensive about them shoehorning in a super woke agenda. Don't get me wrong: I'm all in favour of inclusion and diversity - and I'm cognisant of the fact that Jordan's women were written in a high-school boy way, so good that this is changed-, but the the article surely gives out a particular vibe. I hope the series will not be too activist.
Let's see how they actually handle it. A lot of show and filmmakers like to talk about how their work is breaking stereotypes and all that, but that's just the fashionable thing to say. As long as they don't try to beat us over the head with their diversity angle, I'm fine with it.

I won't debate his intentions of what audience he was trying to attract with his writing because I know literally nothing about it but I will say that those things don't have to be the stuff of teenage boy fantasies. Many people/cultures are perfectly okay with nudity and you have places with public bath houses and nudist colonies in the real world. Polygamy is also a very real, real world thing that happens. So for me I don't read it as a cheapening of what he had the women accomplish and how he portrayed many of them in strong roles. I think you could even make a decent argument (for at least the polygamy part) it was a pretty progressive idea and portrayed the women as forward thinking considering the universe they were portrayed in. This is a universe where calf muscles are getting people horny and 3 chics decide to bang the same guy and can even have their own personal porn through their links to Rand. Kind of wild if you break it down in more crass terms lol.

Another thing. I hope all that slow-mo we've seen so far is just for the teasers and won't actually be in the show everywhere lol. Idk I'm usually not a fan of it.

All the outfits would look twice as good if they just didn't look so damn CLEAN.

It's really simple to use the One Power to do the laundry, didn't you know? If I remember correctly from reading the books 10 years ago, every village had it's own resident Aes Sedai who could help launder your clothes for just a few coppers. Really good business model.

Exactly. I'm a Muslim and grew up in the Middle East. While polygamy is certainly not common there, it's something that very much exists and does not shock me in the slightest. It's a cultural thing. So I'm fine with Jordan showing different aspects of culture, rather than whitewashing everything according to the the modern day Western way of things.

We live in a diverse world, with varied beliefs, cultures, social norms, languages, etiquettes, etc., that makes the world a very interesting place. Homogenization is boring.

"there will be one of you that can stand against him and it is one of the 5 of you". Been awhile since I have read the books but didn't she think it was one of Rand, Mat, and Perrin?

@Cyphon People seem pretty sure it's misdirection and not something they're changing exactly. A way for Moraine to get all of them to come with her. She wants both Egwene and Nynaeve because they can channel anyways.

I haven't been fully sold on the show with all the teasers we've seen so far, but this trailer has me fully on board.

Btw that Aiel looked amazing.
Agreed! This is what I was talking about previously, about behind the scenes footage, etc. An edited and "finished" video looks way different.

Also, where were the Aiel?? Maybe I didn't notice them because of how dark the video was (please, Hollywood, enough with the no lighting obsession).

Rosamund Pike pronounced “Aes Sedai” as “Ice Sedai” in one video. I always thought it was “Ace” Sedai. Probably a number of names that I have wrong in my head apparently.
It's funny how different people can interpret the same thing different ways. Even when I was reading the books years ago, I always pronounced it as "ice" or "eyes" and not "ace." Don't know why. But I'm sure there are a bunch of names that I got wrong in there. For instance, did you know that it's pronounced "Eg-wane"? I always thought her name was "Ejh-ween."

As @ReguIa said, it might be misdirection. Or it could simply be a change they made for the show, making it a bit more "equal" by making the viewer think the Dragon Reborn could be a female (tying it in with the diversity/woke agenda @Silvion Night mentioned).

@afa Check at 1:48-1.49 in the video. It's speculated that it's from a flashback that Tam has of the Aiel War. Notice the armor (which looks phenomenal btw) on the solider with the 9 bees which means it's an Illianer soldier. Tam was a captain in their elite troops when he found Rand.

Alright, this got me properly psyched. And echoing @afa and my earlier comment: this looks way, way better than the earlier stills.

Now I'm peeved by the fact that it will be a staggered roll out, with 1 new episode airing weekly. I want it all! Then again, maybe for the best... :)

Thought the trailer looked fantastic. The trollocs look great and since we're going to see them often, that's very important. There's obviously going to be changes in any adaptation, but it doesn't feel like it's straying from the core identity of the story. Only time will tell, I guess.

I also like how Amazon is releasing the episodes by giving the best of both worlds. The first three episodes coming out together, then once a week after. I feel like that allows for far more hype to build, more discussion, theories, etc to tie you over between episodes. Think it's a fair compromise.

Yeah, my rational mind agrees with you on the release strategy. My emotional side wants everything released right NOW! :p

About the trollocs: how cool is it that they use practical effects in stead of CGI? I was so happy when I saw this. It looks more real that way. When you for instance compare the orcs from LOTR and the goblins from the Hobbit movies, I prefer the practical effect orcs 100%.

Dang, those are some observation skills you have there. Nice. I actually did note that part, but I thought the Aiel Waste was more of a desert region, while this was snow. Am I misremembering?

Agreed. I think Netflix has spoiled everyone into getting used to the idea of having all episodes dumped simultaneously, but I actually don't mind the weekly releases. TV shows are meant to be episodic, which means they are meant to let each episode fester and whet your appetite every week, and for viewers to digest them, slowly. Having all episodes available back-to-back kind of ruins it, in my opinion.

Same here. I get using CGI in places where you have to, or for creatures that cannot be realistically depicted using old-school special effects (like the dragons in GoT) but I'm not a fan of using it everywhere. Regardless of how good the effect might be, it can't help but look like CGI.

This show needs to become crazy popular if we're to see it all the way to the end. For that to happen I think it's important to go with the weekly schedule to make it stay around as long as possible. It won't be another Game of Thrones but I think it could be close enough.

@afa You're not misremembering. This scene in the trailer (if it is a Tam flashback) is likely from the final battle outside of Tar Valon. On the slopes of Dragonmount is where Tam will find Rand.

I'm not sure GoT becomes the phenomenon it did if all the episodes were released at the same time. Maybe it does, but the watercooler discussions every Monday morning sure didn't hurt it.

Forgot where I saw it(maybe in that GQ article) but it was stated that the practical costumes were so good, they were able to reallocate some of the CGI budget into other areas. Certainly a promising sign. CGI is best used sparingly.

Yep, it was.
"In the end, Mike Weber told me, the Trollocs looked so good on camera that a whole tranche of their budget that had been slated for VFX, to make the monsters look real, was saved for something else. And this is how you make a show like The Wheel of Time."
I was disappointed by the Mat recasting. Barney Harris seemed like a great casting for the role, really looked and sounded the part. Very weird how they announce news like that and not a peep of anything else has come to light yet. I do think if anyone HAD to be recast, Mat this early in the show would be the least jarring for various reasons.
