George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series has become, in many ways, the gold standard for modern epic fantasy. Martin--dubbed the "American Tolkien" by Time magazine--has created a world that is as rich and vital as any piece of historical fiction, set in an age of knights an...

Hands down best fantasy book series of all time, books like the Lord of Rings and Mazalan Book of the Fallen pale in comparison.

It's a good read, but is unnecessarily crude in some parts.

Lord of the Rings is a lot better in my opinion, due to the quality of it's prose, deep and consistent world building and it's consistent plot that actually has a finish.

This series does a good job at world building, but kind of fails at everything else, and yet is better written than 90% of the stuff out there now.

However the Name of the Wind is better.

Read the first 3 books when they came out many years back, definitely not the best series of all time, not even close. Only reason it's popular now is because of the TV series, just good marketing...

It should have been number 1, but Crows and Dragons have definitely dropped it from that spot. Poorly written compared to the first 3 books.

    Books 1-3: 4 Stars
    Books 4 : 1 Star

Definitely not the best fantasy series of all time.

Good series that had the potential to be the best of all-time, but the last 2 books have been pretty bad. With how long it's taking Martin to come out with the next book, I'm not confident at all that he will find the magic of the first 3 books again.

Overrated, mediocre writing the TV show owns the books.

Very overrated. Don't get me wrong, its a good series, but without the tv series it's popularity would not be so high.

This entire list is ridiculous, but putting GOT #1 is particularly egregious. While the TV show is decent, especially compared to other fantasy TV series and movies, the books are mediocre at best. This is isn't the first series to write about sex and violence, but it seems that this is the sole criterion used to rank this list. To describe the violence as "realistic" raises the question of "how the hell would you know if it's realistic or not?" Secondly, we're talking about fantasy--quite literally the opposite of reality. Realism is not high up on the list of necessary features for a great fantasy book/series. Great writing, storytelling, character development, and world-building are far more important and GOT is weak in all of these categories. The primary accomplishment of GOT is that it popularized the fantasy genre through a high quality HBO show. Mediocre writing, good marketing.

I have listened to dozens of audiobooks and Roy Dotrice is one of the WORST readers out there. Every woman, including Aria in his Game of Thrones, sounds like an 80 year old hag. His voices change, he cannot consistently pronounce names and it is TORTURE to listen to him. How he made this list of excellent audiobook readers is bewildering.
