A "Must Read" in classic fantasy. Ursula Leguin's haunting style and simple story lines are akin to the verbal history of myths and legends, not stuffed with gratuitous world building as is the current style. Don't let the small size of the volumes fool you, the story is rich and the setting as intersting as many works ten times the size. I have always enjoyed writers with an economical style such as Bradbury and Hemmingway. While Leguin is much more mystical she is not one to waste the reader's time. Very enjoyable.

Far and away, the first book is the best. It's far better than most of the books on this list.

I am stuck roughly a quarter through this book. I have seldom read anything less inspiring and more boring.Took me three hours to read less than 50 pages, dozed off a couple of times.Bland characters, no rhythm or music in the prose.

At once leaving this reader poignant but with a sense of closure. What a mighty mighty work of fiction.

I rate this highly across the entire sci fi / fantasy landscape. A very different work from Left hand of darkness
