This is an absolutely wonderful series. Unfortunately, I think it's sold very short here, given the review on the Best Fantasy Series list. This is so much more than the re-telling of a romance - in fact, it's not the re-telling of a romance at all. In 15 books, Kerr manages to create a few unique cultures in a setting across worlds. Yes some of the "flashbacks" to past lives of the main characters might seem repetetive at first glance, however they are each different and each life adds a completely new aspect to the main characters soul, which is exactly the point of reincarnation here. The intricate systems of magic and rebirth are all captured near-perfectly in the series, an incredibly satisfying read to fantasy fans of all ages.

Not so much sweetly romantic as rather unsweetly somewhat romantic, actually.

Read it for the vast historical scope of a very well-built world and for the myriad of small and sometimes seemingly insignificant events that together form the history, shaping the wars and the politics of Deverry.

Excellent pick! I would like to add that, while incorporating a lot of parody to classical fantasy literature, Pratchett does build a quite complex universe in his some 39 books to date. Discworld is written in what I come to define as a "definitely British blend of humour" and addresses as already mentioned classical fantasy, but also science fiction, and ultimately real society, culture and politics. A must read for any fantasy fan. I recommend it heartily....

Fantastic series! Well written and very intricate. Sometime hard to follow each character as it moves from era to era throughout the series. Overall, I would not list this as a romance at all, quite the contrary, it has a lot of sad endings and bitter truths. This series will really make you feel the characters as they develop...or die. A must read!
