Volume I of The Dragonriders of Pern®, the groundbreaking series by master storyteller Anne McCaffrey

On a beautiful world called Pern, an ancient way of life is about to come under attack from a myth that is all too real. Lessa is an outcast survivor—her parents murdered, her birthright stolen—a strong young woman who has never stopped dreaming of revenge. But when an ancient threat to Pern reemerges, Lessa will rise—upon the back of a great dragon with whom she shares a telepathic bond more intimate than any human connection. Together, dragon and rider will fly . . . and Pern will be changed forever.

Strictly speaking this is a space fanatasy, with a limit on "magic" and very sensible rules. Still in all, it is about people and dragons and as such falls under the fanatsy umbrella. The opening section won the Hugo (I think) for best novella. Pern is world settled by humans from space who have since forotten space travel in their long struggel to survive. The dragons are psychic symbiots with select humans who "impress" with a specific dragon at it's hatching. The first book follow the adventures of an orphan girl who manages to impress a queen dragon (gold colored of course) and her journey into the culture of the dragonriders. Very detailed and well thought out fanatsy world, with lots of spin-offs and sequels as is usual with McCaffrey. Good read!
