Derivative drivel that adds no originality or innovation to the fantasy genre. At best a Star Wars ripoff at worst a wet dream of a teenage with a dragon fetish.

Farm boy, who discovers something wanted by an evil emperor, goes to an old story teller who was once a part of a magical race of peace keepers. Together they go to a fortress to rescue a princes but on this journey the old teacher is killed by one of emperor's minions. Returning to the rebel base the farm boy becomes a hero in an unlikely battle. Is this the story to Star Wars A New Hope or Eragon?

Can't agree with you, I liked the characters (especially the fact that the dragon is a She) and the story, although it was getting "weaker" and more long-winding in the last two books.

Eragon and Inheritance were the best books, and then there's Eldest and Brisingr, which you don't actually have to read because each book provides a short chapter on what has been going on.

I have read worse. It is just bog standard and rather derivative. What narks me about it is Paolini. When this kid starts comparing himself to 'Tolkien at his best' you know he needs a slap!

5 Stars if you avoid reading the final 100 pages of last book! The way this series ended will keep me from even considering anything else Paolini will write.

I liked this series a lot. I don't think it's a direct rip-off, but if you know how the sub-conscience works it isn't direct. I love this series.

Your right, the narrative is not a complete rip off, the plot on the other hand, is.

If you have actually read this series then I am not sure how people can say it is that terrible. Sapheria is one of my favorite characters, along with rohen. I can understand if people feel it might have ripped off star wars but if you actually read the whole series through then I find it hard to believe that it can be classified as one of the worst books. I have seen many books on these lists that I would classify as the worst books I have ever read...but I guess to each is own.

Sapheria is actually a decent character if I remember correctly. Everything else about the novels is horrible. This was one of the only times I've ever started a series and had no desire to finish it (I read the first two books and couldn't be bothered after that). Usually, if it's bad I'll push through just to see how it ends.

Never read beyond the first book as the plot was too predictable (i.e a medieval Star Wars).

On the plus side, it was a good read as the story moved along quickly and did draw you in. I dislike the fact that Paolini was so highly rated when he didn't really add anything new or original to the genre.

I loved it when it was released. But over the the time as the books, and me, were becoming older I realized what a horrible rip-off this series is.And don't get me started on the writing. A 16-Year old Author might compose a book that's good enough for a 12-Year old boy, who likes the idea of an average teenager, like him, becoming a sword-swinging, spell-casting, dragon-riding-super-badass who saves the world from the evil king but by the time you reach the age of 16 yourself, you should have come to the realisation that you except more from a fantasy book than some boyish dreams. And if that's all you are into... there are a lot off authors out there that can deliver that stereotype with at least a little bit of writing skill and if you're lucky a minimum of new ideas.

If you ignore the derivative nature of the plot, then this series was quite good. That said, I really did not enjoy the last book and felt like it didn't really click with the rest of the plot. Too much new stuff happened and it didn't seem too necessary. Also add the fact that the plot is heavily based on Star Wars and LOTR, and I would say that although it was interesting to read it wasn't that great.

The rest of the books are not a Star Wars ripoff, however, the first and 4th(last) are the best books.
