There is enough plot in this book to fit into a trilogy by itself, it makes sense they split it into two books.

Very surprised this did not appear in the top 10, personally feel it is a lot better than many of the books higher up in the list.

May I ask in what way you felt 'Magician' was a superior work, specifically to other titles you saw? I'd like to know what inspired that thought. I've read 'Magician' and perhaps 12 sequels, and had come to a decidely more negative opinion (including of the 1st book). What am I missing (besides the moredhel/dark elves, the best representation of that idea I've seen), that's sublime, here, if you don't mind sharing your opinion on that? Thanks.

This review does Magician no justice, I am almost finished the riftwar cycle, almost 30 books I think and it has to be the best most complex set of novels I have ever read. Saying it is simplistic and about saving the damsel in distress, well you sir just havnt read the rest

W/respect: Feist is VERY conventional--no aspect of greatness

My review was deleted. 'Magician' has a clever writer, but I found the material conventional, offering no insight into the numinous or fantasies, myth or magic, decent plotwise but not more--and owing an immense and unacknowledged debt to Michael Moorcock concerning everything whatsoever having to do with Tomas and the 'Valheru' (pronounced: 'Dragon-riders of Melnibone').
--This book is always right on the edge of offending me with its derivateveness* (*if that's a word), across the board--something strangely little acknowledged. But it helped set a precedent of writing Tolkien clones WHO at least weren't complete--and rather tasteless, reworkings like 'Shanarrah' (sic). The suggestion it was a 'great' book in any aspect of itself (naught specific has been named that I remember) is...just extremely strange, to me. Perhaps the greatest praise I can give (amid Feist's sappy psychologizing) is the introduction of the book's #3 hero to this fantasy world, the brooding, quiet, resentful, clever, heroic and also brooding 'Arutha'--who appears to have been influential himself on that type in the genre. Always remember: everything else, including the hubcaps, is stolen, often undiluted, from Dunsany, M. Moorcock, Howard, Tolkien, etc. But it diminishes other books quite significantly when Feist's work is placed next to them as 'Great'. It will always trigger that response: I tentatively suggest, despite the affection of many presently active, it be taken off any 'greatest fantasy' list immediately, and for that reason. Rather, I move for an expeditious ballot or VV on the issue, essentially to that effect, in the extremely near future. Now is fine.

Well, all I can say is you are just wrong. These books are written over almost a 30 year period. The amount of thought that has been put into these books is insane. They span worlds and universes. I guess it's just a little too complicated for some people

For 'Heroic Fantasy' it's 96% just a ripoff of 'Elric'. Not cool.
