I've been reading through this series, and I don't know how long it's been since you've read the first book, but you might want to reconsider recommending it as a starting point.

I'm not sure what happened here, but The Magic of Recluce seems like a first draft that was never even glanced at before being published. The whole thing is a rather incoherent mess, and it's very difficult to grasp why things are happening at any given time. The details of Lerris' journey don't make much since, the dialogue is just weird, like people are having two different conversations, and Lerris is also wildly inconsistent sometimes. He spends the whole book either being bored or wanting answers to his questions, and when somebody decides to give him answers...he gets bored partway through the answers and zones out, and you, the reader, also miss out on the explanations because of this. Seriously? Is Modesitt pulling a prank on me?

Fortunately, for reasons I don't fully understand, I decided to plow ahead to the second book and found it significantly better. It's much cleaner and more coherent, and actually one of the better stories in the series as well, in my opinion. So, I'd recommend to anybody interested to start with the second book, Towers of the Sunset. You'll have to read the first book at some point in order to set up for its direct sequel, The Death of Chaos (probably the best book in the series, ironically), but at least you'll have some grounding in the world's mechanics and you'll know that Modesitt actually can write decently enough, for which the Magic of Recluce does not give much evidence.

The maximum chaotic of the essential continents, because Do My Homework For Me of its proximity to Recluce: There must be stability between Recluce’s need for order, which determines Candar’s inversely proportional traits. however for approximately 1,000 years before Recluce even had inhabitants, Candar changed into the site of the upward thrust and fall of several civilizations.
