J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to The Lord of the Rings trilogy—now available in a movie tie-in edition paperback.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

This really should be #1 along with Watership Downs and the Last Unicorn. The Hobbit and the Last Unicorn are my two favorite stand-alone books ever. I have probably read each of them 20 times.

I think Harry Potter should be number 1... it's better than the Hobbit it's much more appropriate....

If you're looking for a tale of adventure and travel, the Hobbit is a better choice. If you're more into the magic and dueling type of thing, then the Harry Potter series is probably the better choice. I've read both books and can say that they're both incredible books, though the Hobbit is a little dreary at the beginning.

How has no one commented that this book is about Bilbo not Frodo?

("Smug"? Spellcheck time.) The Hobbit is, first, a story targeted for children or young adults, so it's rather different in tone from most of the adult fantasy we encounter. Second, it's a "traveler's tale". Like the archetype of traveler's tales, Gulliver's Travels, the story hangs on the strange characters and odd adventures that are met in the course of a long voyage. If you read it as an adult, and you're expecting something more akin to a drama, you will probably be disappointed. The movie adaptation, by pulling a background subplot into the foreground, turned it into a drama (with lots of action) but that's totally not what The Hobbit, the novel, is.
