The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

The type of circus I would love to visit. Touches of "The Prestige" meets "Cirque de Sole" Magic!

So... I rarely listen to other people's idea of best, not usually agreeing (and you DID leave my favorite author off the list, but as it is a sentimental choice, I can't blame you overly much.). However, the write-up on the Night Circus was so compelling I HAD to seek it out. Appropriate eh? I was not disappointed. I, like the circus goers, was enchanted from the start. Thank you.

Thanks for putting The Night Circus on your list. Just read it in two sittings--best book I've read all year.

I'm sorry to say I didn't like it. I waited for the story to unfurl, but - in my opinion - it simply didn't. But it's probably a matter of taste. My mother-in-law loved it, my own mum could barely bring herself to finish it...
