When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. At thirteen, he led a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king…

It’s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what’s rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar’s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him—and he has nothing left to lose. But treachery awaits him in his father’s castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?

The best fantasy book I've ever read. You just fall in love with Jorg, even if you know his dark side. His humor and his philosophy on life: priceless.

One of the best. Should definitively be higher and the writing is insanely crisp with poetic one liners.

Usually I cannot put a good story down but for this one, It was hard for me to get through the beginning few chapters. I trust this site though, and continued reading and am so glad I did. Great writing, good plot, and some great philosophical musings by Jorg. You do find yourself rooting for him even though he is at times detestable. I am 3/4 of the way through the whole book and am sure it will finish strong - if not I will reply to my original comment and let you all know : ) Happy Reading!

Really did not like it at all -characters or plot. Very disappointed

It's a top ten. The Assassin's apprentice, for instance, is not even close to this. It's brilliant. You never get bored of it. The protagonist starts like an antihero, but he's more complex than this.

I picked up this book in a library right after struggling to get finish book 2 of Mistborn series (which I disliked so much I was thinking about giving up reading fantasy for good). Loved Prince of Thorns from page 1, actually I loved it so much I already bought all books written by Mark Lawrence.

Couldn't find myself to empathise with the main character. At one point I simply stopped caring and dropped the book halfway.

I love a grim dark fantasy like The Axe and the Throne, but this is just terrible. The main character is extremely annoying, pretentious and overconfident. Feels like I'm watching a shitty anime for teenagers.

I've read almost all of the top 25 and this is probably my favorite. Jorg is definitely my favorite individual character. The writing is excellent. The world building is natural and gleaned from context rather than awkward speeches or other obvious constructs that allow pages of exposition. It's written for adults, and doesn't have the YA feel that A LOT of the books in this genre have (even some of the really good ones). And it gets better with each entry in the trilogy. Can't recommend it enough.
