Not your typical high fantasy for sure--talky, lyrical, meditative. But like Malazan this one is well constructed book-by-book: Each leads up to a single climactic event. The characters are flawed, conceal things about themselves, and most want no part of the world-changing roles they're thrust into. I personally loved the series and find its sensibilities unique and startling.
