John Norman's epic Gorean Saga is one of the longest-running and most successful series in the history of fantasy. It is also one of the most controversial. Over the course of more than thirty books produced over a span of six decades, the series has sold millions of copies and built legions of fans unrivaled in their devotion. E-Reads invites you to rediscover this brilliantly imagined world where men are masters and women live to serve their every desire. TARNSMAN OF GOR Book 1 of the Gorean Saga Tarl Cabot has always believed himself to be a citizen of Earth. He has no inkling that his destiny is far greater than the small planet he has inhabited for the first twenty-odd years of his life. One frosty winter night in the New England woods, he finds himself transported to the planet of Gor, also known as Counter-Earth, where everything is dramatically different from anything he has ever experienced. It emerges that Tarl is to be trained as a Tarnsman, one of the most honored positions in the rigid, caste-bound Gorean society. He is disciplined by the best teachers and warriors that Gor has to offer...but to what end? Read the entire saga, now with brilliant new cover art specially commissioned by E-Reads.

There are sections that drag terribly, however many parts force the reader to think outside the politically correct box. These aren't for timid readers.

lots of info dumps and word for word repetitions in the prose. i read the first one just because i wanted to see how bad it was. the idea of giant bird mounts with steel claws is pretty cool though.

I don't understand why this is on the list ... how does it "blow your mind"?

I actually read a Gor book (possibly no. 11) years ago just to find out if they really were that bad. They are. And I don'nt mind some well written and reasonably intelligent BDSM with my fantasy. That would be empasis on some, well written as well as reasonably intelligent.

Gor is male revenge for Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Oath of the Renunciates" arc in the Darkover series. Read it, if you want to be disgusted in the gender-opposite direction. Reading Bradley first, then Gor afterward, will have you cheering on Norman's male protagonists as they show those uppity females exactly where their proper place is.
