Oh dear, this is my absolute favourite standalone fantasy book. To me it feels like the author really likes the characters and i can feel the warmth as i read it. I have been reading fantasy books for many years and i agree with quite a few of the top choices here so i was pretty mush shocked to find it on the worst fantasy books list

I remember reading The Belgariad in grade school ( I was on a High Fantasy kick having read LotRs, Narnia, and Elric already ) and thinking it was pretty cool at the time.

And then I read The Malloreon ( the second cycle set a few years after the first series ended; my local library had both sets on the same shelf ) and got more and more disgusted as he literally rehashed the plot of the first series in the second.

In fact I was *so* disgusted that never read anything else by him. Judging by this review I've missed nothing but more recycling.
