The Sword of Shannara is the first volume of the classic series that has becomeone of the most popular fantasy tales of all time.

Long ago, the wars of the ancient Evil ruined the world. In peaceful Shady Vale, half-elfin Shea Ohmsford knows little of such troubles. But the supposedly dead Warlock Lord is plotting to destroy everything in his wake. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness is the Sword of Shannara, which can be used only by a trueheir of Shannara. On Shea, last of the bloodline, rests the hope of all the races.

Thus begins the enthralling Shannara epic,a spellbinding tale of adventure, magic, and myth . .

I have to say that after reading his first shannara book I never touched another of his books. There was no excitement in his books, so why to waste our time

I enjoy the books even after having read numerous fantasy books between readings. Yes, it does have a LOTR feel to it (esp in the initially published books), but is not a copy. The books hint at a post apocolyptic time frame indicating a world that was nearly destroyed by technology while blending in the use of magic. The point in all of them is a good vs. evil, power and corruption, sacrifice to prevail. If not thought about intelligently it would appear to be the same story written repeatedly, but then the same could be said for our history.
